Solvang: Meeting with Success
Solvang is located in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley wine country in Santa Barbara County, just two hours up the coast from Los Angeles. It’s known as California’s Little Denmark since the town was founded by Danish-Americans in 1911. USA Today named Solvang one of the 10 Best Historic Small Towns in America for its authentic Scandinavian culture and hospitality in 2016, and in 2017, Solvang was named by Expedia Travel as one of the top 50 cities to vacation in North America.
This Northern European-style destination is ideally situated for group meetings, conferences, weddings and special events from two up to 250. In this mild year-round climate, 18 lodging properties plus dozens of one-of-kind venues offer banquet/meeting rooms and outdoor areas for groups. Rates and facilities range from AAA 4-diamond-rated hotels and resorts to charming inns. The three Solvang properties with the largest number of guest rooms and function space are Hotel Corque with 122 guest rooms & suites, acclaimed Root 246 restaurant and 7,500 square feet of meeting space; the historic Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort on 10,000 acres with 73 guest units, spa, two golf courses, private lake and 6,500 square feet of meeting space; and The Landsby, a modern Scandinavian-style boutique luxury hotel with 50 guest rooms, popular Mad & Vin restaurant and 2,150 square feet of flexible group space.
Within easy walking distance of Solvang accommodations, discover more than a dozen “off-site” venues for groups including Elverhoj Museum of History & Art, K’ Syrah Catering & Events Center, Old Mission Santa Ines, Solvang Festival Theater & Garden Courtyard, Solvang Veterans Memorial Hall and the Wildling Museum.
Numerous area wineries, tasting rooms, restaurants and public parks offer private, reserved areas with even more options for groups.
Solvang CVB staff can assist meeting and tour groups with team-building and incentive activities such as a “skattejagt” which means “treasure hunt” in Danish—and is a popular team-building activity.
The Solvang CVB will provide treasure hunt maps tailored to groups who can roam the village discovering authentic Danish bakeries, chocolatiers, art galleries, unique boutiques, statues like the Little Mermaid and Hans Christian Andersen—then using social media to broadcast their finds—be rewarded with a variety of prizes—perhaps a special dinner at one of 35 restaurants ranging from wine country to international cuisine or a private gathering in one of 24 wine tasting rooms.
Another popular group activity in this Danish-American enclave is “Sweet on Solvang” where up to 20 participants at a time can a take a break from a meeting and learn how to make treats from a fourth-generation Danish baker or get cookie and gingerbread house decorating tips from the baker who’s appeared on national television. Customized 90-minute walking tours of the village are readily available from native Danish-Americans for a nominal fee. Solvang-based Relevé Unlimited is a dynamic and highly regarded corporate event production company specializing in meetings, incentives, special event production and destination management since 1992.
