Solvang Celebrates Arts & Cultural Events Year-round

September 14-16, 2018: 82nd Annual Solvang Danish Days Celebration

Since 1936, “California’s Denmark” celebrates its annual Danish Days to honor the establishment of Solvang by Danish-American educators in 1911; and continue preserving the village’s heritage. Danish and USA flags line the streets, residents don colorful costumes, and there is plentiful folk dancing, live concerts and entertainment—such as Hans Christian Andersen story-telling sessions as well as three parades (Friday candlelight; Saturday afternoon traditional and Sunday afternoon children’s). The Living History program at the Elverhoj Museum of History & Art offers demonstrations of lace-making and interactive art for all ages. The Viking Beer Garden serving brews and Danish open-faced sandwiches is a popular gathering place. Authentic restaurants and bakeries feature tasty cuisine. December 2018: Solvang Annual Julefest Celebration

Solvang, named one of Time Magazine’s “Most Christmas-y Towns in America” sparkles during the annual Julefest (pronounced Yule-Fest) Celebration from December 1, 2018 through January 4, 2019. Village streets are decked with thousands of twinkle lights and 150+ retail boutiques, restaurants, bakeries and wine-tasting rooms host open houses and special events throughout the season. The free Nisse Adventure is for kids of all ages to explore Solvang with a map to find twelve Danish Christmas Elves known as Jule Nisse hidden around town; discover them all, snap pictures and win a prize. Solvang by Candlelight Free Walking Tours are December 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 starting at 5:00 p.m. departing from the Visitors Center with a costumed tour guide providing guests with a battery powered LED candle; sharing history and fun facts while strolling around the village for an hour. On Friday, December 7, 2018, the community tree-lighting ceremony starts at 5:00 p.m. with dance performances and musical entertainment in Solvang Park. The Julefest Parade is Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. featuring horse-drawn carriages, vintage cars, marching bands and plenty of holiday cheer. Enjoy free visits with Santa (Julemanden) in Solvang Park, the Skål Stroll—Julefest Wine & Beer Walk (December 15 & 16) as well as the traditional Nativity Pageant; Solvang Chamber of Commerce Shop, Mingle & Jingle Weekends; concluding with the Christmas Tree Burn Safety Demonstration on Friday evening, January 4, 2019 in the fields at Old Mission Santa Ines.
