The event honors the establishment of Solvang by Danish-Americans in 1911 and continues to preserve Solvang’s authentic Danish heritage. Admission is free and thousands of residents and visitors enjoy the celebration each year. Danish and US flags line the streets, residents and visitors don colorful costumes, and there is folk dancing and entertainment throughout town. Living history is on display with the Ravens of Odin, a professional Viking re-enactment group that creates an authentic encampment in Solvang Park. At an invitation-only reception at Solvang’s Elverhoj (pronounced El-ver-hoy) Museum of Danish History & Art, dignitaries including Solvang Mayor Jim Richardson and Elverhøj Museum Executive Director Esther Jacobsen Bates were joined by more than 150 areal Danes and officials to greet Ambassador Petersen and his wife Birgitte Wilhelmsen to Solvang for his first visit. During his remarks to the assembled guests, Ambassador Petersen declared, “Solvang is the most Danish place I’ve seen in the USA. How can you be so Danish, yet so American? Denmark has never had a better or stronger relationship with the United States than we do today.”...more
